VISIBLE KNOTS

VISIBLE KNOTS

Sometimes unsighty wite knots appear on the surface of the rug where there should be pile. They are at times found in semi-antique Kerman and Nichols Chinese carpets as well as fine antique Kashan rugs. They may also be present in other pieces.White knots do not represent a flaw if there are not too many in the weaving. However, the value of the rug may be slightly reduced if these specks are pervasive. In order to avoid weakening the foundation, they should preferably be left alone or simply touched up,but not cut out,or even pushed through. These knots are part of the natural weavings process and are usually the result of tying horizontal cotton weft threads of various lenghts to one another throughout the rug.
